Wat Rong Khun closed for now for safety reason

The famous Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai’s Mae Lao district has been closed to all visitors and tourists beginning today due to safety concern after several buildings in the temple were found have sustained extensive damages from Monday’s quake.

Mr Chalermchai Kositpipat, national artist and the man behind the construction of this tourist destination, said that initial inspection of damages showed that several buildings were damaged by earthquake and it could not be told by now whether any of them could be repaired or would have to be demolished.

He disclosed that the main vihara which houses the murals sustained heavy damages.  As for the murals or wall paintings, he said it would take about two years to restore them.

However, he said that if any parts of the temple which are intact and safe enough, they would be reopened for visits.
