US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson issued a statement on Thailand National Day today (Dec 5), saying the US government looks forward to nurturing friendship with Thailand under the leadership of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn and expects the country to hold elections next year.
“On behalf of the Government of the United States of America, I offer my heartfelt greetings to the people of the Kingdom of Thailand on your National Day, December 5th. We remember the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s deep and enduring friendship with the United States and we look forward to further nurturing that friendship under the leadership of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn,” he said in the statement posted on the US embassy’s website.
He noted that next year marks the 200-year anniversary of the US-Thai relationship that has brought many benefits over time to the two nations and to the region.
“Additionally, we look forward to Thailand holding elections next year,” he said, adding that Thailand remains a “trusted US friend and ally in Asia” whether as a partner for security, public health, or commercial growth.
“I would like to convey our warmest regards to all the Thai people and wishes for a peaceful and prosperous year to come,” the US Secretary of State said.
