Sangha Council spares Phra Dhammachayo the axe

Phra Dhammachayo, the controversial abbot of Wat Dhammaya, is spared the defrocking after the Sangha Council today ruled that he had not defied a ruling of the late Supreme Patriach over a decade ago because he had already returned to the temple all the assets meant for the temple.

Spokesman of the National Buddhism Office Mr  Somchai Surachatri said after the council’s meeting that the council’s ruling today was a reconfirmation of the one made in 2000 which reaffirms Phra Dhammachayo’s monkhood status.

The council chairman Phra Prommethi, meanwhile, pleaded with all parties concerned not to raise Phra Dhammachayo’s issue  for discussion again pointing that the country is in the process of reconciliation.

Separately, representatives of the Department of Special Investigation and the Anti-Money Laundering Office met with the religious affairs committee of the National Reform Council to discuss the defrocking of the abbot of Wat Dhammakaya.
