Rubber farmers call off mass rally but want higher compensation

Rubber farmers today called on the government to increase the farming subsidy for farmers on an individual basis rather than a household with promise not to take to the street tomorrow in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The latest demand by rubber planters’ representatives was reached after their leaders met and discussed the government’s latest farming subsidy with officials of the Office of the Rubber Welfare Fund.

After the meeting, their leader Therdsak Sermsri, president of the Network for Rubber Farmers, said they accepted the latest offer of the government but would like the government to revise slightly of the offer.

Instead of just cash subsidy for a household, he said, he would like that the subsidy go to an individual farmer, and not to specify the period of the harvesting season.

Moreover he said they wanted the government to subsidize farmers who have no land ownership right, and to refrain from prosecuting farmers in connection with the road blockades.
