Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon clinched the women’s singles championship at the 2018 Malaysia Masters badminton tournament in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (Jan 21) by defeating world’s No 1 Tai Tsu Ying of Taiwan 21-16, 14-21 and 24-22.
Ratchanok was twice away from defeat at 19-20 and 20-21 in the third and final game but managed to turn things around with consistent play to win the match in one hour and five minutes.
The world’s No 5 received US$26,250 in prize money for the championship victory.
Ratchanok and Tai Tsu Ying clashed in 19 encounters with the Thai having won 10 times against the Taiwanese’s 9. They last met in the final match of the Super Series and Ratchanok won 2-0 games.
