Pick-up truck driver charged in crash that killed 2, injured 15 in Pattaya

One man and a woman were killed and about 15 others were injured when a pick- up truck rammed into about 10 motorcycles after the driver who has a record of seizure disorder passed out behind the wheel.

The tragic incident occurred on the busy South Pattaya road in Tambon Nong Prue, Bang Lamung district, Monday morning.

Rescue workers who rushed to the scene after being alerted of the accident found two motorcycles stuck under the black Isuzu pick-up truck and about ten other motorcycles scattering on the road strewn with broken parts of the motorcycles.

The male dead victim was identified as Wutthichai Laokam, 23 whereas the dead woman was not identified. Most of the 15 injured were students of Muang Pattaya 8 school.

The pick-up driver, identified as Akkradet Udomrat, 44, was captured by people at the scene and handed over to Pattaya police.

During the interrogation, Akkradet claimed he passed out as he was driving on the South Pattaya road. He said he didn’t know what happened after he passed out, but when he recovered, he was shocked to find out that he was involved in the accident. He also told the police that he had a record of epileptic seizure.

But witnesses alleged that he drove on the opposite direction of the traffic. Police, however, did not buy his whole story and had him detained at the police station to be tested for drug abuse and alcohol. The test showed he was clean of alcohol while the result of drug abuse from Bang Lamung hospital showed the test for drug use is positive.

Pol Col Apichai Krobpetch, the superintendent of Pattaya police, said the driver had been treated for seizure disorder for five years. However, he would be charged with reckless driving causing deaths and injuries to the other people and driving without regard to the safety of the other people and drug abuse charge.

Out of 15 victims, 11 of them were allowed to go home while other 4 patients had to stay at the hospital.
