Philippines Actor faces life in prison for marijuana possession

Philippines actor Mark Anthony Fernandez is likely to face life in prison for having in his possession one kilogramme of marijuana in his Ford Mustang, The Manila Times Online reported on Wednesday.

Angeles City police on Monday seized the drug in the Ford Mustang after a brief car chase which ended with the police shooting at the car’s tires. The car driver identified himself as actor Mark Anthony Fernandez who was tested positive for marijuana use.

Fernandez claimed he bought the marijuana for P50,000 from a man named Francis in Angeles City and he was using it to prevent cancer as suggested by a doctor.

Chief superintendent Aaron Aquino, the Central Luzon police director, said Fernandez is unlikely post bail because of the volume of marijuana found in his possession and will likely “rot in jail for the rest of his life”.

Angeles City prosecutor’s office ordered the actor detained for allegedly violating Sections 5 and 11 of the Dangerous Drugs Act pertaining to transport and possession of illegal drugs.

Fernandez, the only son of Paranaque politician and former sexy star Alma Moreno and the late action star Rudy Fernandez, is the fourth showbiz personality to be arrested by police since the Duterte administration launched the campaign against illicit drugs.

The 37-year old actor has a history of drug use. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he went into rehabilitation for two-year periods each time, returning to showbiz in between.
