Omsin is now seriously sick, let’s pray for her

Omsin, the sea turtle which swallowed 915 coins into its stomach has fallen very sick and an emergency operation was conducted yesterday to save its life.

Veterinarian Nantarika Chansue, director of Sea Animal Diseases Control Centre, Faculty of Veterinary of Chulalongkorn University, posted on her Facebook today saying “She is still in ICU… very serious…lets pray!

She said “Yesterday we did an emergency operation on Bank due to the complication from intestinal volvulus and strangulation. It might be from the adjustment of the GI tract in more empty space post operation.”

According to her, Omsin or which she called the female turtle “Bank”, she fell very sick yesterday showing symptom of depression and has stomachache.

Her deteriorating condition caught the team of veterinarians with surprise as on Friday and could eat 2-3 pieces of food and could swim well, she said.

An immediate detailed examination of her condition was then conducted and it was found that the sea turtle had suffered complication from “volvulus and strangulation”.

This might be caused by fast recovery of the muscles in the abdomen intestines after having big space following the operation to remove the coins from the stomach.

There was more gas in the stomach and loss of protein, she said.

She then added ” She is still in ICU… very serious…lets pray!

Omsin, the female green sea turtle which swallowed almost 1,000 coins in its stomach, went under almost seven hours of operation two weeks ago that removed over 900 coins from her stomach.

The name “Bank” came from Piggy Bank, the traditional name of a coin container normally used by children.

Speaking to reporters earlier, Professor Nantarika said she hoped that her patient’s case would serve as a precedent for all throwing coins into the pond for luck to rethink again as what they did is no longer merit-making, but a mercy killing of animal.

But what she was very concerned about is the toxic lead level in her blood after the accumulation of so many coins in the stomach for a very long time.
