NLD to launch constitutional amendment petition next week

The National League for Democracy will launch its petition campaign to push for changes to the 2008 constitution next week, the Myanmar Times quoted party officials as saying.

NLD executive committee member, Dr Zaw Myint Maung, said that the campaign will be launched on May 27 and run until July 19.

The main objective of the campaign is to secure key amendments to the 2008 constitution, one of which, 59(f), effectively bars NLD chairperson Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from becoming president of Myanmar.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi sent a personal message to constituents urging them to make sure that they sign the petition properly to insure that it is honoured when delivered to parliament.

“Please listen carefully to the explanation of how to sign and how the amendment of the 2008 constitutional reform signature campaign will be held. Discuss with your family and friends how to sign it. This is really important for everyone,” she said.

Dr Zaw Myint Maung said signatures would be sent to parliament via the NLD central office.  Those wishing to sign will be able to do so at NLD offices at the village, township, district and regional levels.

“Voters have to sign individually. We will deliver pamphlets to every house inviting people to sign,” he said.
