Thailand’s Luksika Kumkhum beats Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic 6-1, 6-3 at the Australian Open women’s singles second round match in Melbourne today (Jan 17).

The 20-year-old Bencic, ranked 78th, defeated seven-time major winner Venus Williams in the opening-round two days ago.

Lusika’s victory against Bencic sent the 24-year-old Thai qualifier to the third round of Australian Open for the first time.

“Yes, it’s the first year that I pass to the third round. I am very happy. I’ve made it because I keep telling my coach and my family that I would try to pass the second round and today I did it. I will do my best in the next round,” the 124th-ranked Luksika said in a post-match interview.

The Thai qualifier will play Petra Martic of Croatia in the round of 32 on Friday (Jan 19).
