Prime Minister Hun Sen branded some journalists and media outlets as extortionists and tax evaders while praising President Donald Trump’s efforts to go after “fake” news in his annual Meet the Press on Sunday (Jan 21), The Phnom Penh Post Online reported.
In his address to some 3,000 members of the media, Hun Sen blamed the media for exaggeration, saying that it dictated whether or not a situation is hot or cold.
“If you want the situation to be hot, then you write insulting things and then it becomes hot,” he said.
The prime minister, however, applauded President Trump’s attack on “fake” news media as he gave out awards to media outlets he disapproved.
“Even in the US, they have this kind of press and the US president created press awards for fake and lying news,” said Hun Sen.
He added that, in Cambodia, the same thing also happened, but warned that it must be stopped otherwise they might find their licenses revoked by the Ministry of Information.
