Embattled Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has conceded defeat to rival Anies Baswedan and running mate Sandiaga Uno in the gubernatorial runoff election on Wednesday, The Jakarta Post Online reported on Thursday.
“Congratulations to Anies and Sandiago, their campaign team and supporters. We’re actually the same, we want Jakarta to be better because it is our home,” said Ahok.
He then called on his loyal supporters to move on from the election which was seen as the most divisive in the city’s history. He added that he would help Anies in the transition period and would accelerate his programs until the end of his term in October.
Anies is set to meet Ahok at the City Hall Thursday morning, several hours before the governor is due to attend his blasphemy case hearing.
Various polls on Wednesday evening showed Anies held the lead over Ahok in the election. A quick count conducted by Kompas, for example, appeared to show that Anies obtained 58 percent of the vote against Ahok’s 42 percent.
