The Department of Marine yesterday told owners of all fishing boats to register all their boats by Feb 20 under the government’s effort to eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
The director-general of the department Mr Chirute Visalachitra said they were required to register after several agencies in charge of combatting illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing have upgraded their systems to control and monitor fishing boats.
He said all fishing boats now fitted with proper communication devices must be registered.
Owners of fishing boats have been given the period between January 20 and February 20 to register for operation from 2018 to 2020. Failure to register, operators of boats without proper licensing will face severe punishment according to the amended Fishing Act.
He said the registration would enable authorities to inspect each boat’s operations and safety provisions.
Besides, it would allow authorities to check on whether illegal foreign workers were employed to work or not, he said.
