It said since the opening of the constituency election registration from December 28 to January 1, a total of 1,272 people have applied to contest for elections in 347 constituencies of the total 375 constituencies in 77 provinces.
But it said that of the 77 provinces, registration of candidacies in five provinces comprising 24 constituencies could not be carried out due to disruptions by protesters. They included Surat Thani, Krabi, Trang, Phatthalung and Songkhla.
Meanwhile there is no candidate applying to contest in 28 constituencies of eight provinces. They are Surat Thani, Trang, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Chumphon, Phuket and Nakhon Si Thammarat.
The EC also said that there are eight constituencies in a total of 22 constituencies in 12 provinces where there is only one candidate in each constituency.
For those who could not register for constituency elections, EC officials advised them to file complaints with the police to retain their rights so as to be entitled for remedies from the EC. So far a total of 123 persons have lodged complaints.
