Deadline for nationality verification of foreign migrant workers extended until June 29

The Labour Ministry had decided to extend the deadline until June 29 to allow foreign migrant workers to register in order to verify their nationalities.

Mr Sumet Mahosot, director-general of Employment Department, said Monday that out of a total of 1.6 million of foreign migrant workers from Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia who have registered with the Labour Ministry only about 200,000 of them have their nationalities verified.

He explained that the delay in nationality verification stemmed from two factors: inadequate officials from the three countries who were sent to Thailand to help in the verification process and the workers themselves do not have proper documents.

Mr Adisorn Kerdmongkol, a representative of the foreign migrant workers’ network, said that nationality verification procedures were not designed to correspond with the reality that the workers are spread out across the country.  This, he said, has opened an opportunity for job brokers to exploit the migrant workers.
