Forty-six civic groups and organizations on Wednesday submitted an open letter addressed to the head of the National Council for Peace and Order opposing an announcement of the junta which will exempt implementation of projects related to communication, irrigation, hospitals, public disaster prevention, residential buildings from environment impacts assessment studies.

The groups have demanded that the announcement in question, NCPO’s Announcement No 9/2559, be revoked claiming that it will increase conflicts in the Thai society.

Instead, they suggested that the government should speed up restructuring the procedure in preparing reports on environment impacts assessment to upgrade its credibility. The procedural restructuring should be incorporated in the charter draft.

The groups also demanded that the existing environment promotion and protection law be upgraded so it can be used as a legal tool to support sustainable development.
