Only 6 percent or 16.48 million cubic metres of water in Mae Kwang dam in Doi Saket district of Chiang Mai are available for consumption which is regarded as the lowest in 20 years.

Out of a full capacity of 263 million cubic metres, Mae Kwang dam now holds only 30.48 million cubic metres of water or 12 percent of its full capacity. And of these, only 6 percent of them are available for consumption with the remainder being dead storage which cannot be used at all.

However, Mr Krasae Ruekdamnoenkit, chief of water allocation and irrigation system, assured that there is sufficient water for consumption for residents in Doi Saket, Sansai and San Kamphaeng districts to last through the dry season as only one million cubic metres of water are allocated for consumption each month.

Many farmers have already turned to underground water to feed their second rice crops which means additional production costs for them, he said.
