The closure of Sakon Nakhon airport has been extended by six hours to 9pm on Saturday (July 29) to re-assess the flooding situation and the volume of water in the airport, said Department of Airports director-general Darun Chaisaeng.
The department on Friday issued an announcement to close the Sakon Nakhon airport from 3am on July 28 to 3pm on July 29 or when the flooding has been resolved.
Following Mr Darun’s inspection of the airport on Saturday morning and a briefing from Thipawan Wangsanuwat, the airport director, it was decided at a meeting to extend the airport closure by six hours from 3pm to 9pm today to re-assess the situation.
To make up for the cancellations of Nok Air Flights DD9402/03 on the Don Mueang-Sakon Nakhon-Don Meuang route on Saturday, more flights were arranged between Don Meuang and Nakhon Phanom. They were Flight DD6406 (Don Meuang – Nakhon Phanom, 8.05-9.15am) and Flight DD6407 (Nakhon Phanom-Don Meuang, 9.45-10.55am).
However, at 5.20pm the Department of Airports announced that Sakon Nakhon airport would be closed until midnight of Monday, July 31 to make sure that the flooded taxiway and runway are safe to use.
