Boat operators rush to apply for operating licenses in marine park

Many operators of long-tailed and speed boats showed up at the office of the Haad Nopparatthara-Phi-Phi islands national park on Wednesday to apply for operating licenses.

Over 80 tour boat operators were arrested and fined by officials during the Songkran festival for operating services to tourists without licenses.

The park chief, Mr Sarayuth Tanthien, disclosed Wednesday that over 100 long-tailed and speed boats were registered today out of a total of about 2,000 boats used to operate in the park area which covers the famous Phi-Phi islands, Porda island and Taley Waek or the Divided Sea in Tambon Ao Nang, Krabi’s Muang district.

Mr Sarayuth said that the mandatory requirement for all boats catering to foreign and local tourists was meant to improve public safety.
