Army ranger shot and wounded

An Army ranger was seriously injured when southern insurgents ambushed a group of five rangers while they were coming downhill to fetch some fresh water in a stream for consumption in Yi Ngor district of Narathiwat province this morning.

Yi Ngor police inspector Pol Lt Bandhit Chuchart said the injured ranger identifidd as Kittipong Pichaisongkram and four other rangers were ordered by their command to go downhill to fetch some water for consumption.

As he and other rangers were fetching the water, insurgents hiding in bushes near the stream fired several shots from M-16 assault rifles at them. Kittipong was hit while other returning fire. The insurgents later fled from the scene.

The rangers were setting up a jungle base atop the hill overlooking the road near the scene where EOD team was earlier ambushed with roadside bomb and rifles killing four of them a few weeks ago.
