The unofficial winner of Jakarta gubernatorial election Anies Baswedan made a conciliatory gesture on Thursday by holding a meeting with his rival and incumbent Jakarta governor Basuki “Ahokj” Tjahaja Purnama at the City Hall, according to a report of the Jakarta Post Online on Friday.
The two men agreed to have the meeting after they exchanged text messages on Wednesday shortly after pollsters projected that Anies would win the election.
Knowing that Ahok would have to leave the City Hall early for his blasmphemy trial, Anies arrived for the meeting at about 7.30 am, interrupting Ahok’s regular meet-and-greet program with residents.
Upon seeing Anies, Ahok cut short his routine meeting with the people and moved to greet Anies and proceeded to escort him to the governor’s mansion next to the City Hall.
Anies said during the meeting that he and Ahok discussed efforts to start a reconciliatory process between supporters of the two camps.
“We are all Jakartans. Let bygone be bygone. Let us start a new chapter,” Arnes told reporters after the meeting.
