8 tourists injured in boat collision in sea off Phuket

Eight foreign tourists were injured in a collision of two speedboats in the sea off Muang district of Phuket on late Tuesday afternoon (Jan 16).

The injured who included two men and six women were among of a group of 29 tourists travelling in the same speedboat, named Satakamon 333 and driven by Mr Anucha Ngarnkhaeng, on their way back to Phuket from a sight-seeing tour in Ao Phang-nga.

As the speedboat was cruising at Ao Rongnam Sapam in Tambon Koh Kaew, it collided with another speedboat coming from the opposite direction, causing injuries to eight tourists on board.

Initial reports said some of the injured tourists are Italian nationals.

All the tourists, including the injured, were later transferred to another speedboat which happened to pass through the scene of the accident, and sent to a pier.  The injured were picked up by rescue workers from the Kusoltham Phuket Foundation and rushed to the hospital.

The skippers of the two speedboats which were involved in the accident were later escorted by police to the Muang district police station for interrogation.

The tourists arrived in Phuket in a cruise ship, Costa Cruise Victoria, which has been dropping anchor in front of Patong beach.
