A combined government force seized 76 kilogrammes of heroin with a street value of about 100 million baht following a brief shooting in Sang Khom district of Nong Khai province early on Friday (Dec 1), Provincial Police Region 4 deputy commissioner Pol Maj Gen Chalong Pakpinyo said.
Pol Maj Gen Chalong said a team of provincial and narcotic suppression police and soldiers from Surasak Montree Force were deployed on the bank of the Mekong River near Ban Huay Luang Son in Tambon Ban Muang of Nong Khai’s Sang Khon district on receiving a tip-off from informants that a quantity of drug would be smuggled across the river to this spot.
At about 3am, ten men were seen arriving on a boat and went ashore, each carrying a bag. When the authorities showed up and told them to stop for a search, some of them opened fire briefly at them while fleeing. The men then abandoned their bags and disappeared into a nearby forest.
The authorities found in the bags 200 bars of heroin, weighing altogether 76.59 kilogrammes.
Pol Maj Gen Chalong said the heroin was believed to have been produced in the Golden Triangle area, delivered through Laos and was being smuggled into Thailand when it was seized.
